Last week, the 2022 Maritime RobotX Competition took place at the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith. RobotX is an international competition designed to build university students’ skills and experience in autonomous robotic systems. It’s an opportunity for students to develop their passion and innovate with cutting-edge solutions in the maritime domain.
The competition involves a series of challenges where competitors use a 5-metre WAM-V Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) to navigate courses and perform key tasks. These tasks involve solving contemporary robotics challenges with object detection, identification and classification, autonomous navigation, and cross-domain collaborative robotics with an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV).The winner of the challenge was Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University from Florida, USA. Fourth place went to the University of Sydney team, including team leader John Sumskas a Reach Robotics Software Engineer. We are very proud of John’s achievement.
Reach Robotics partnered with RobotX to support the event and to promote the future of robotics within the robotics community. Team members from our Sales and R&D teams exhibited the Reach Alpha and Reach Bravo underwater manipulator systems with timed challenges for attendees to complete.
Exhibiting at an event like RobotX is always rewarding for Reach Robotics as it keeps us connected with students and the next generation of robotics engineers. We hope we have provided an example of the type of company a student graduating with a mechatronic or other engineering degree could join!
“Reach Robotics has been proud to sponsor the RobotX Maritime Challenge this year. It has been a great opportunity to support the next generation of engineers as they push themselves and develop their skills in autonomous robotics systems whilst also giving them a greater awareness of career opportunities in robotics.”
Rosie Willett, Sponsorships Lead.
At Reach Robotics, we are committed to supporting university societies and competitions, encouraging students to engage with robotics and understand the versatility of the industry. We also host seasonal summer and winter internships to help foster young talent and often use our internship programs as a launch pad for graduate careers.
