Satellite Communications at high latitudes?_Campbellsci论坛问答

We have some sites in the extreme north of Canada (~72 to 78 deg. N latitude). I am wondering if anyone knows of or has experience with satellite data retrieval at these latitudes. From what I understand GOES only covers up to 70 degrees latitude and it sounds like ARGOS would cover this area but Campbell no longer has an ARGOS transmitter...

Thanks,
Bill

Some our customers in Alaska use HugesNet.

Yep ... the same provider of satellite home internet service. They do have modems that are rated for cold climates.

The other satellite system commonly used is Iridium which offers full-birectional access to the remote logger, using Loggernet. Use of that system is not cheap though. Please contact your local office for advice and guidance on likely costs.

Thanks for the responses. I have decided that Iridium is the way to go for us. The cost for the equipment is pretty reasonable (about $1,700) and the cost for service is also reasonable depending on how much bandwidth you need. I also found out that Campbell is going to be coming out with a new ARGOS transmitter here in the next few months.

You could also go with iridium short burst data modems. Total cost is about $600 for the hardware and monthly costs are about $20 for most applications.

FYI our new Argos transmitter is now available. Ask about the ST-21 unit.

Anyone looking at Iridium for their project might want to consider JouBeh Technologies (www.joubeh.com). They have very competitive pricing on equipment and service and have been very helpful (which seems to be rare these days). They also carry a kit that makes it very easy to interface with about any CSI logger.

Can anyone offer any advice on setting up short burst data transfer with either a CR10X or CR1000 via an Iridium A3LAX modem? The Campbell Canada tech note is great for dial-up, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience of SBD set up?

eb1689, did you get a leg up ono this one?

I'm trying to do similar at the moment, so any light you can shed would be great

Thanks

Hi Grant,
See the forum post: http://www.campbellsci.com/forum/messages.cfm?threadid=D0139611-A10F-8B4E-CE80C0F5FB8F859F
for some really useful advice.
I almost got there, but sadly not in time for this field season as I was missing a bit of hardware.
Good luck!
